Pedal Power ACT
“Fifty years of making Canberra the cycling capital of Australia. From a 1974 protest ride to 8,500+ members shaping a city with 1,000km of shared paths.”
Club Administrator, Club Secretary
The organisation
Pedal Power ACT was born from a protest ride. In the spring of 1974, more than 50 cyclists rode from Belconnen to Civic to demand safe, separated bike paths. In February 1975, Pedal Power ACT was formally established. Fifty years on, the organisation is Canberra's largest cycling body. Their advocacy has helped shape a city with 1,000 kilometres of shared paths and over 370 dedicated cycling routes. Pedal Power runs Learn to Ride courses, the Fitability program for vision-impaired cyclists, Pedal It Forward subsidies, a bike library, and social rides.
The challenge
An advocacy organisation with nearly 9,000 contacts is not a club — it is a movement. Pedal Power manages 44 distinct membership levels covering individual riders, families, concession holders, corporate supporters, and affiliated cycling groups. Events range from mass advocacy rides to weekly social spins to multi-day courses.
