## Key takeaways

- A code of conduct sets expectations before problems arise - not as punishment after the fact
- SAI's coaching standards and your NSF's code of ethics provide national frameworks for coach conduct
- Separate codes for coaches, players, and committee members reflect different responsibilities and power dynamics
- Codes must be acknowledged at registration to give the committee authority to enforce consequences

A district\-level athletics coach in Chennai was reported by three parents for using abusive language during junior training sessions\. The club's president wanted to suspend the coach\. The treasurer argued they couldn't \- the coach was a former state champion and the only qualified coach they had\. Nobody on the committee could point to a signed document that defined acceptable coaching behaviour\.

Without a signed code, every disciplinary situation becomes a personal conflict\. With one, it becomes a process\. For the broader policy framework, see our [policy checklist for Indian clubs](/blog/essential-policies-checklist-indian-sports-clubs)\.

## Coach code of conduct

**Core commitments:** Prioritise safety over results\. Hold recognised coaching qualifications\. Never use physical punishment, verbal abuse, or intimidation\. Comply with POCSO obligations\. Follow the two\-adult rule with junior participants\. Report safeguarding concerns to the designated officer immediately\.

**Consequences:** Warning, suspension, or removal\. Safeguarding breaches reported to the NSF and, where required, to the police\.

## Player code of conduct

**Core commitments:** Play by the rules\. Respect teammates, opponents, coaches, and officials\. Be punctual and communicate absences\. Care for equipment\. No bullying or discrimination\.

**For junior players,** age\-appropriate expectations signed by a parent or guardian\.

## Committee member code of conduct

Act in the club's interests\. Declare conflicts of interest\. Maintain confidentiality\. Attend meetings\. Support decisions publicly\.

## Implementation

Check your NSF for templates first\. Make acknowledgement a condition of registration\. [TidyHQ](/products/memberships) includes document acknowledgement in the registration process, creating a record of who signed and when\.

## Frequently asked questions

### What if the coach is a volunteer and refuses to sign?

They don't coach\. The code is a condition of the role, regardless of whether the coach is paid or volunteer\.
